Wendy's New Cookbook: "Love in the Kitchen"

Love in the KitchenWendy is working late nights at the office (which is usually my job) putting the finishing touches on her first cookbook, Love in the Kitchen. I was making final edits to it last night and wanted to post the introduction on our blog. First, here’s a synopsis…

One of Wendy’s most popular questions is what she cooks for a family of 16. While most people are terrified at the thought of what the Jeub Family Kitchen looks like, it really isn’t all that bad. In fact, Wendy is loved by her family and friends for making some of the best food imaginable. The children and I love her cooking! What is most intriguing about her cookbook is this: Wendy shows how to make feeding many mouths incredibly affordable. Despite the downturn in the economy, her grocery bill still is between $500 and $700 per month!

Interested? The cookbook will be fresh off the Monument Publishing presses on Monday April 14 and you can order your copy in our new Resource Center. From now through Mother’s Day, we’re throwing in a second cookbook for HALF OFF! Now you can buy one for mom and grandma. Click here for information. Introduction: Spicing Up Love

I’m so glad that you’ve picked up this book. My hope is that it will be an inspiration to you—a sigh of relief—a useful tool for your family. Love in the Kitchen will encourage you to be the fabulous cook that you want to be for your family. If the idea of cooking for a growing family overwhelms you, this cookbook will help to put that fear behind you. You’re on your way to mastering Love in the Kitchen.

First, let me introduce myself. I am the mother of 14 children, two who are adult girls happily on their own. That leaves a total of 14 of us at home (12 kids plus my husband, Chris, and me), that I am feeding each and every day. A dozen children aged 15 and younger has given me plenty of practice in the kitchen!

My husband, who is a wonderful taster for me, made in 2006 less than $37k, so we have had to shop on a tight budget and make meals that stretch. We make great efforts to find the best deals in town and will go out of our way to create frugal meals. Our kitchen is centered in our modest 2400 sq. ft. home and we have pots and pans over 10 years old. Our laundry room was converted several years ago into a walk-in pantry where we have a second refrigerator, a freezer and shelves for groceries.

Dear friends, I can’t begin to tell you how fruitful and loving the Jeub kitchen is! In my 24 years of parenting, my kids have never gone hungry. Every evening our meals consist of loving conversation and full tummies. We love to have guests over for meals and the complements often are over the quantity and quality of our food. We seldom eat out (can you imagine the cost?) because we’re very content to eat at home. We’ve found that meals made in our kitchen taste better, fill our appetites, and contribute to the heritage of our home. I love my kitchen, and you can love yours, too!

I receive emails and letters from moms and dads alike asking for my “secrets” to bringing order to the kitchen. This book has several good ideas, but I need to let you know one thing upfront: I am not naturally an organized person. My pantry is not in perfect order. The floor is not always beautifully swept, and the dishes aren’t always up-to-date. But I don’t let this faze me, and neither should it faze you. Thankfully, the secret to a loving kitchen is not in perfect organizational skills—and I, personally, am grateful for that!

So, what is the secret? It’s in knowing and believing in what your mission is. My mission is to please my family and friends, to be generous with what the Lord has given me, and to make my meals as fulfilling as possible.

n my eyes, this is simply good stewardship with my resources, a reliable response to the blessings in my pantry. And I would love for you to experience how freeing and fulfilling it can be to love your family by having a plan for your meals.

With that in mind, my hope is that this book will be a blessing to you. The ideas and recipes contained in the following pages will help you figure out how to get from Step A to Step B and beyond. You, too, will be able to feed your family nutritiously and frugally. Hopefully, your family will begin to see anything other than homemade cooking as second best. You will save money at the grocery store and stretch your food more throughout the weeks. Your kitchen will be a central unifying room in your home where friends and family can join together and share in bountiful fellowship. As you develop your own Love in the Kitchen, you will grow to love being able to serve others, and they, in turn, will grow to love your cooking.

Love in the kitchen will be one of your greatest rewards, and your family will enjoy rich blessings with you.
